I'm down in northern Georgia (Clayton) for a friends wedding but was able to snag a nice big block (3" thick) of spalted maple from a roadside lumber dude. Years worth of rosettes in the waiting. Hope it fits in my carry-on luggage.

Don't let fear or common sense stop you from trying to build something

I'm hoping to get some work done on some new bending and inside forms for a small jumbo and parlour guitar. I bought a sheet of flexible plywood for the curves. If it works, they should be very light and rigid, and not very labour intensive. One 6"x96" strip will be enough to do both forms for one guitar style with enough left for six more. I'll take pictures as I go, and post later.

P.S. Nice find, Doug. If you run out of room in your luggage, chuck the dress shoes!

Just closed the box on my fourth and routed the binding channels. My first time using rosewood! The smell coming off the router dust is amazing - just like rich dark chocolate Unfortunately I'm also packing up and downsizing my workshop as I'm moving next week to start a new cabinet making job. I'm hoping to finish up on this one and then I'll start making ukuleles, which I figure will be easier to do in my spare room!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I leveled the ebony binding that I installed yesterday on a Cocobolo Bearclaw sitka small jumbo. The rest of the weekend I will veneer the arm rest and brace an Engleman top for a Baritone project.

Doug, there are lots of beautiful places to see near Clayton. Chattooga River (excellent rafting), Tallulah Gorge, Lake Burton/Lake Rabun. On your way back to Atlanta, you may want to stop here in Gainesville to check out CAG Lumber. Stephen has tons of Walnut and Maple.

Started work on a pimped-out LP Special.
The top is backyard Ash I cut eariler this year.
I'm running the neck lamination down the back for a faux neck through look.
Found some Coco planks I forgot I had and whittled out a fretboard.
I still have not chosen a bridge, probably a Nashville TOM and tailpiece.
Ash, A. mahog, Coco, and Maple.

Setting up to turn the pegs for the viola da gamba. I've made a couple of pegs as "sketches".

The viol is now stained and has 4 coats of varnish. The photo shows it after the first.

But, somehow, when I turned around, there were 4 mahogany necks and one walnut neck sitting on my bench. How did that happen?

And, there seem to be three spalted maple, bound, Tele Thinline bodies, some Tele necks, two Ash rims for an "O" size body, and a couple of rectangular guitars on the bench.

I making the stuffing right now! And I have 4 new guitars strung up and playing ready for the Errington show on Vancouver Island. It's great. 4 very different guitars. It's a good study to be able to play a few side by side like that.

Trying to get this guy finished. My first shot at tru oil, so far so good.
4 coats so far. Will gladly take any tips offered.

After looking at the work that everybody is doing this weekend, I feel like I should burn my stash and give up.
Doug, that viola is incredible.
It is that time of the year when I build an ukulele to take to Hawaii and this year it will be koa and spruce with mystery-wood neck. Probably eight tuners. I am still ambivalent about the sound of koa so I will use a spruce soundboard this time. Lots of time to finish as soon as I put a new motor on my drum-sander.

Unk, I am betting that it is alittle unusual for koa and ukeleles to head to Hawaii. That is akin to taking tequila to Mexico. Just sayin....

Hope all of you up north had a great holiday! I spent all day Saturday at Kent (Carlos) Everett's shop in his bracing class. My first "formal" luthier class and very well worth the time and expense. Carlos and his wife are delightful. It was a great weekend.

I look at some of these awesome builds and incredible artistry, and think, I'm not worthy!

Getting this electric built for my son-in-law who'll be here from London this Thanksgiving here in Georgia. Got it shaped up, routed the cavities, cut out the cover, glued the fretboard on, and fretted it this weekend.
